CONGENITAL MALFORMATIONS OF THE NERVOUS SYSTEM IN NEWBORN BABIES IN ESPIRITO SANTO (2007-2022)

Introdução

Malformations of the nervous system can be functional or structural, affecting 1 to 10:1,000 of live births with a high mortality. Therefore it is extremely important to know about them and the importance of prenatal care for early interventions, as well as reducing cases of spina bifida.

Objetivo

To analyze the profile of congenital nervous system malformations in newborns in Espírito Santo, from 2007 to 2022.

Método

Descriptive, time series epidemiological study. Data was collected in the Health Information System (TABNET), through the Live Birth Information System (SINASC) database, identified by ICD-10: Q00 to Q079.

Resultados

In the analysis of the period, 7548 congenital malformations were recorded in newborns in Espírito Santo, 826 of which were related to the nervous system (10.9% of the total number of congenital malformations). When evaluating by ICD-10, 111 (13.4%) cases of anencephaly (Q000), 54 (6.5%) of encephalocele (Q01), 169 (20.4%) of microcephaly (Q02), 176 (21.3%) of hydrocephalus (Q03), 155 (18.7%) of spina bifida (Q05).

Conclusão

Among all congenital malformations, the prevalence of SN malformations is low, but when present they are associated with high mortality rates. Knowing the profile of these anomalies is important for health promotion projects, as well as improving prenatal care, aiming at family planning with adequate use of folic acid (to reduce the risk of neural tube defects), started at the appropriate time. Furthermore, ultrasound diagnosis is extremely important, and the examination should be encouraged at the appropriate times and planning should be carried out when any changes are identified.
