EPIDEMIOLOGICAL ANALYSIS OF EPILEPSY IN PEDIATRIC PATIENTS IN NORTHEAST BRAZIL: AN ECOLOGICAL STUDY FROM 2013 TO 2023.

Introdução

Epilepsy is a chronic neurological condition, recognized by the predisposition to the occurrence of seizures on a constant basis, due to abnormal, excessive and transitory electrical activity in the brain. This clinical phenomenon is of big relevance to the pediatric population, considering the risk of cognitive and social complications.

Objetivo

To analyze the epidemiological characteristics of epilepsy in pediatric patients from the Northeast brazilian region, according to age group and temporal marks.

Método

Ecological descriptive epidemiological study, with data available in the Sistema de Informações Hospitalares of SUS (SIH/SUS) about the epidemiology of hospitalizations for epilepsy in patients up to 9 years of age in the period of 2013-2023. The variables analyzed were: hospitalization, area, gender, character of care, deaths and mortality rate occurred in the period in question.

Resultados

Between 2013-2023, in the Northeast region of Brazil, 41,644 hospitalizations for epilepsy were recorded in patients up to 9 years old. Ceará was the state that recorded the most cases (30.24%), followed by Bahia (25.17%), Pernambuco (22.42%), Maranhão (9.0%), Piauí (3.77%), Paraíba (2.93%), Rio Grande do Norte (2.51%), Sergipe (2.36%) and Alagoas (1.57%). When analyzing hospitalizations based on gender, there is a male predominance, corresponding to 57.85% of cases. Regarding the character of care, it is observed that 98.15% of hospitalizations were carried out on an urgent basis. The average cost per hospitalization was R$544.19, oscillating between R$2,879.75 (Alagoas) and R$316.45 (Maranhão). In the 10 years analyzed, the total mortality rate was 0.56%, corresponding to 232 deaths. Based on the total number of deaths, the male population and the state of Bahia presented the most significant data, corresponding to 51.29% and 30.17% of records.

Conclusão

It is clear that the male pediatric population residing in the state of Ceará is the most affected population group in terms of number of hospitalizations. However, it is possible to verify that in relation to the number of deaths, the Bahia male population has the highest number of records. Furthermore, it is also possible to see that this public health obstacle has presented itself as a pediatric emergency in the majority of cases. This reflects the need for early diagnosis, with the aim of guaranteeing a better prognosis for the most affected population.
