Título

PROFILE OF PEDIATRIC HOSPITALIZATIONS FOR MALIGNANT BRAIN NEOPLASM IN THE NORTHERN REGION OF BRAZIL: AN ECOLOGICAL APPROACH

Introdução

Malignant brain neoplasms are characterized by the disordered multiplication of cells of the nervous system, which can occur due to different factors, such as genetic predisposition or environmental exposures. Brain neoplasms are the biggest cause of death from cancer in pediatrics, which requires additional care as of the diagnosis around the patients.

Objetivo

To describe the epidemiological profile of pediatric patients hospitalized for malignant brain neoplasms in the Northern Region of Brazil between 2013 to 2023.

Método

This is an epidemiological, cross-sectional and quantitative study, formulated using data from the Department of Informatics of the Unified Health System (DATASUS). To obtain the data, the variables analyzed were: sex, race, age (0 - 9 years) and deaths, between the periods from 2013 to 2023.

Resultados

1,013 hospitalizations were recorded in the North region between 0 and 9 years of age with malignant neoplasia of the brain, with emphasis on the state of Pará, which accounted for 531 visits (52%). Other relevant aspects were related to the states of Amapá, with 0 records of assistance during the period analyzed, and the state of Roraima with only one notification of assistance in 2015. Males were the most affected in most states - with 61.89 % of total. Regarding age, 24 children were under 1 year old, 387 were between 1 and 4 years old and 602 were between 5 and 9 years old (the most prevalent). Mixed race individuals were the most affected in most states, with 656 cases, followed by 244 who did not have race notification. Finally, it was observed that malignant neoplasia of the brain was the cause of 104 deaths in the period analyzed, the majority in the state of Pará, with 65 cases (62.5%).

Conclusão

The study concluded that pediatric hospitalizations due to malignant brain neoplasms represent a significant health problem in the Northern region of Brazil. Pará was responsible for the majority of these hospitalizations. The prevalence was higher among boys, being of mixed race, especially those aged between 5 and 9 years. 104 deaths were recorded due to this cause, with the highest number also in Pará. This scenario highlights the urgent need for public health policies aimed at early diagnosis and treatment in the region.
