Título

CHARACTERIZATION OF CLINICAL-EPIDEMIOLOGICAL PROFILE OF THE NEUROPEDIATRICS NURSERY: A CROSS-SECTIONAL STUDY IN A TERTIARY HOSPITAL IN RECIFE-PERNAMBUCO

Introdução

Pediatric patients with various neurological diseases benefit from hospitalization, which in most cases allows faster access to investigative and therapeutic means.

Objetivo

To describe the clinical-epidemiological profile of patients admitted to the neuropediatrics nursery and classify them according to their neurological syndromes, exams performed and their outcome.

Método

Descriptive, cross-sectional study, based on the review of medical records of elective hospitalizations between the months of March/2015 and June/2024.

Resultados

The patient sample studied was 543 patients admitted to the reference hospital for neuropediatrics in Recife-Pernambuco between the months of March 2015 and June 2024, 52,22% of whom were boys and 46,77% were girls, with a mean age of 5 - 10 years. The majority of patients investigated are from the epilepsy group (36.7%), however there is a significant number of patients with cognitive disorders (18.4%), followed by neuromuscular diseases (12%). It is also noteworthy that in this service the majority can be investigated in less than two weeks (81.76%), a relatively short time, and even though many have an unchanged course of the disease (46.77%), although the majority have had an improvement in their condition from baseline (49.35%).It was possible to observe an increase in cognitive complaints in the period after the COViD 19 pandemic.

Conclusão

The highest frequency among the diagnostic groups identified was epilepsy. This fact may have occurred because they are emergency and elective hospitalizations, predominantly for crisis control and investigation with complex exams (brain MRI and electroencephalogram). Furthermore, a significant portion of patients, at the outcome, had some improvement in their health conditions and, therefore, in the quality of life of patients and their caregivers, which demonstrate a positive impact and could lead to better outcomes in the future.
