OVERVIEW OF HOSPITAL ADMISSIONS FOR EPILEPSY IN BABIES IN THE NORTHEAST REGION: AN EPIDEMIOLOGICAL STUDY OF THE LAST 10 YEARS

Introdução

Given the growing need to understand and address issues related to epilepsy in infants, this study aims to analyze hospital admissions for this condition in the northeastern region of Brazil over the past decade.

Objetivo

The aim of this study is to analyze hospital admissions for epilepsy in babies in the northeastern region of Brazil over the past decade, aiming to identify epidemiological patterns and regional variations. This analysis seeks to provide insights for the development of more effective strategies for the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of epilepsy in this vulnerable patient group.

Método

This study adopted a descriptive and quantitative epidemiological approach, using data from the Unified Health System (DATASUS). Variables related to hospital admissions in the Northeast region for patients under 1 year old diagnosed with epilepsy were analyzed. The analysis covered the past 10 years to identify patterns and trends over time and to assess regional differences.

Resultados

During the comparative analysis between 2013 and 2023, a significant increase of 52.18% in the number of epilepsy hospital admissions was observed in the Northeast region of Brazil. The state of Ceará stood out with the highest percentage increase, recording a surge of 271.08%, while Paraíba was the only state to experience a decrease, with a reduction of 6.8% in epilepsy admissions among infants under 1 year old. The most significant peak in cases occurred in Bahia in 2021, with 372 epilepsy admissions recorded. Bahia also had the highest average number of admissions over the last 10 years, with 273 admissions per year, totaling 3,016 admissions during the analyzed period. Conversely, Alagoas had the lowest average number of admissions, with 18.63 admissions per year and a total of 207 admissions over the past 10 years. It is noteworthy that 2021 had the highest number of admissions in the Northeast region during the analyzed period, with 1,268 cases registered, while the lowest number of admissions was observed in 2013, with a total of 734 admissions.

Conclusão

A notable increase, particularly in Ceará, was observed in epilepsy admissions among infants under 1 year old. This underscores the urgency of effective healthcare policies to prevent, diagnose, and treat this condition. Additionally, it is crucial to investigate the reasons behind the decrease in admissions in Paraíba.
